Woman Raped on Journey Home

A woman was forced off a street and raped as she made her way home. Police are appealing for witnesses after the attack on the 24-year-old on Glasgow's Maryhill Road. She was travelling from the Drumchapel area at about 2.30am when she was forced into the driveway of disused premises near the Killermont Polo Club restaurant. The suspect is described as black, about 6ft, with a heavy build. He was wearing a dark jumper with a hood. Detective Inspector Craig Willison said: "This was a horrendous ordeal for a young woman to have to experience and it is critical that we trace this man as soon as possible. "I would like to reassure the community that our officers are doing everything they can to find the person responsible. "Incidents like this are extremely rare, particularly in this part of the city. However we need help from members of the public who may have vital information to assist with the investigation.'' Officers want to speak to the driver of a black hackney cab which stopped to pick the victim up. DI Willison said: "I would appeal to the taxi driver who drove the victim home to come forward - we need to speak to him as a matter of urgency. "I would also urge anyone who was in the surrounding area around that time who may have seen anything suspicious to contact police. "Officers are currently checking CCTV and will also be conducting door-to-door enquiries in the area.'' Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
