A woman has died and 15 others infected following the outbreak of a flu-like virus at a cancer care centre in Glasgow.

Medical experts have advised family and friends of patients at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre to not visit for at least 48-hours to try prevent spreading the illness.

A total of 15 patients have tested positive with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) which causes cold-like symptoms and is spread through sneezing or touching surfaces with the virus on it.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed on Monday that a woman who had already been giving cause for concern had died as a result of the virus.

Of the patients infected, four have been discharged home and ten remain in the centre across two wards but none are giving cause for concern.

RSV is the most common germ that causes lung and airway infections in infants and young children, however, adults with compromised immune systems, symptoms can be more severe.

Dr Theresa Inkster said: "If you have any cold or flu like symptoms, please do not visit loved ones in the Beatson until at least 48-hours after the symptoms have cleared up.

"I'd also urge all visitors to remember the importance of hand hygeine when entering and leaving hospital premises.

Dr Inkster also expressed her sympathies to the family of the woman who has died.

She added: "All appropriate infection control measures are in place."
