Detectives investigating an attempted murder in which a shot was fired at a car are trying to trace two pedestrians and the occupants of three vehicles seen in the area at the time.

Officers were called to Poplar Street in Greenock, Inverclyde, at about 12.45pm on Sunday after a report that a firearm had been discharged at a Vauxhall Insignia vehicle.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Police would like to trace a woman who was in Poplar Street around the time of the incident.

She was wearing a black jacket with the fur-trimmed hood up, and was walking with a young girl wearing a white or cream padded jacket.

They would also like to speak to a man who was wearing a black hooded jacket, black hat, blue jeans and carrying a blue plastic bag, and the occupants of a black three-door Vauxhall Astra and a light blue Citroen Picasso.

Detective Chief Inspector Catriona Henderson said: "The man responsible is described as white, of slim build. He was wearing dark-coloured clothing and had a scarf over his face.

"A black Audi Q7 was seen in the local area around the time the shooting took place, and I would like to hear from anyone with saw this vehicle, or has any information relating to this car or occupants to contact police.

"I would like to get the message across to people that they shouldn't assume what we know, but should come forward no matter how insignificant the information they hold may seem.

"I understand that people may have concerns about the incident but I would like to reassure them that everything possible is being done to trace who is responsible. There are additional officers patrolling the area to provide reassurance to the public and if anyone has any concerns, please speak to officers.''
