Around 400 soldiers from The Royal Highland Fusiliers have marched through the steets of Glasgow after returning from Afghanistan.

You can see a video of their parade here:

The deployment to Kabul was part of the UK’s commitment to the country, providing security training to allow the Government of Afghanistan to police and defend itself.

Lieutenant Colonel Graeme Wearmouth OBE, Commanding Officer 2 SCOTS, said: “It will be a tremendous honour for the Battalion to parade in Ayr, Glasgow and Penicuik and thank the local communities for their ongoing support.

“As the Kabul Protection Unit, 2 SCOTS’ primary mission was to protect NATO advisers and other personnel striving to advise and mentor the various Afghan Security institutions which are so critical to Afghanistan’s future success.

“Alongside American, Australian and Danish partners 2 SCOTS conducted over 7,300 force protection missions. The operational tour was not without challenges and some risk, but these are features of service life which energise us as soldiers. We formed some very close bonds with our multinational coalition partners and it was a privilege to be part of the NATO mission at this stage in the campaign given the UK’s commitment and sacrifice to Afghanistan.

“Following these parades, we will be preparing for the next challenge: being held at readiness as part of Scotland’s Fighting 51st Infantry Brigade.”
