VIDEO: Confusion as "shared space" junction opens

Campaigners say a crossroads in Kirkintilloch stripped of traffic lights and road markings is unsafe

Clyde News is being told motorists and pedestrians are playing 'Russian Roulette' with their safety in Kirkintilloch.

A controversial so-called "shared space" junction has been fully opened to traffic as part of a £3.14M upgrade of the town centre.

The crossroads on the Cowgate has been stripped of traffic lights, kerbs and road markings as part of a makeover designed to reduce accidents and make the town centre more people friendly.

But, road safety campaigners say it is an accident waiting to happen.

Here is a video report on what it is like:

Campaigners have already taken a petition to the Transport Minister at Holyrood calling on him to call for a moratorium on other similar crossings being built in Scotland.

But, the decision on road layout rests with local authorities.

East Dunbartonshire Council is defending the design saying it will improve safety by forcing drivers to slow down.
