Two women accused of murdering Troon mum cleared of all charges except murder

Two women accused of murdering a disabled mum in her own home were cleared of concealing the fact she was dead by burning scented candles. Aunt and niece Lynnette Greenop, 40, and Shayla Greenop, 20, of Ayr, are on trial accused of murdering 46-year-old Sharon Greenop between September and November, 2016, in the home they shared in Troon, Ayrshire.

Sharon Greenop, who was the sister of Lynette and the mother of Shayla, was found in her bed by police on November 10, 2016 and the jury has heard she may have lain dead for several weeks.

A pathologist has told the High Court in Glasgow that Sharon Greenop had 19 rib fractures and also fractures to her neck, but the cause of death was unascertained.

The jury has heard that disabled Sharon had a history of being admitted to hospital after falling.

At the close of the Crown case Ashley Edwards withdrew a fraud charge against the pair which alleged that they cleaned up blood in her bedroom, burned scented candles and failed to notify her death to the Department of Works and Pensions in order to obtain her ÂŁ386.88 a week benefits.

A breach of the peace charge which alleged they made offensive remarks about their sister and mother was also withdraw, as was a charge of theft and of claiming ÂŁ62.10 a week in carer's allowance against Lynette Greenop.

Judge Lady Carmichael told the women: “These charges have been withdrawn against you and I formally acquit you of them.”

Lynette Greenop now only faces charges of murdering her sister and also assaulting her by striking her on the head and body on various occasions between November 11, 2009 and September 8, 2016.

Her niece is only accused of murder.

It is alleged that that they repeatedly struck Sharon on her head and body with an object or objects unknown, compressed her neck and applied pressure to her chest, failed to obtain medical help for her and murdered her.

Both women deny the charges agains them.

The trial before Lady Carmichael continues.
