Two pensioners in a serious condition after a road crash in Dalry

An appeal for witnesses has been launched after a serious road crash in Dalry on New Year's Eve that's left two pensioners in serious conditions in hospital.

At around 11:10am on Sunday 31 December, a 24 year-old man was driving a Peugeot panel van southbound on the A737, Saltcoats Road, Dalry, when it appears the vehicle lost control and crashed into a Smart Forfour car being driven northbound by an 80 year-old man.

Emergency services attended and the 80 year-old driver of the Smart Forfour, and his 70 year-old passenger were taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. Hospital staff describe them both as being in a serious condition.

The driver of the Peugeot van was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he was treated for his injuries then released after treatment.

Sergeant Ian Thornton of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine said: 'The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing, and at this time I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash, or anyone with information that may assist this investigation to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine through 101 quoting reference number 1423 of 31st December.'
