Two police officers are in hospital following an incident in Greenock this morning.

Emergency services were called to a disturbance in Gateside Gardens at around 8.45am.

Two officers were taken to the Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment.

The area has been sealed off and there is a heavy police presence.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection - with Police Scotland stressing there was never any risk to the wider public.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 8.45am today to an incident in Gateside Gardens, Greenock.

"Two officers were injured and taken to the IRH for treatment.

"Officers are at the scene and enquiries continuing.

"A man is in custody and has been taken to hospital."

Andrea MacDonald, chair of the Scottish Police Federation, said: "Our thoughts are with the injured officers and their families. Once again we see how difficult and dangerous a job it is.

"Police officers put themselves between other professionals and the public and dangerous individuals sometimes with life-changing consequences for themselves and their families.

"We wish our colleagues a speedy and full recovery."
