The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after two guinea pigs were left at a roadside in Airdrie.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Saturday when the pets were found by a member of the public on Meikle Drumgray Road in Greengairs.

The female guinea pigs are now in the care of the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Hamilton, where they have been named Axel and Ajax.

Inspector Jack Marshall said, “Axel and Ajax were found inside their green and white carrier next to the gate which leads onto the recycling centre on the bypass road.

“They have some skin issues and are currently on medication for this but we’re sure they will make a full recovery without any issues.

“We are asking anyone in the area who may know who dumped them in this way to contact us as soon as possible on 03000 999 999.

“Axel and Ajax will stay in our care until we find them the loving new home they deserve.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
