Two children threatened at knife point in attempted robbery in Newton Mearns
An investigation's been launched after two children were threatened at knife point in an attempted robbery in Newton Mearns.
A14 year-old boy and a 15 year-old girl were walking on the cycle path between Barrhead Road and Crookfur Road around 9:30PM on Saturday 27 August when they were approached by a man who threatened the children with a knife and demanded their personal property.
The pair shouted to draw attention to themselves and escaped unharmed but are said to be in a state of shock, whilst the suspect fled the scene empty handed.
The suspect is described as a white man with a skinny build and approximately 5,8” in height. His hair was described as brown and shaved in. At the time of the incident the suspect was wearing a black hooded jacket with the hood up, jogging bottoms, trainers and white t-shirt.
Detective Constable Fiona Weir, from the Community Investigation Unit said today
“Two children were threatened at knife point by a man intent on robbing them of their personal property. Although unharmed, they were clearly shocked by what occurred. Officers at the Community Investigation Unit have begun their investigation to trace the man responsible. We will ensure this man is held to account for his actions.
“We have conducted a number of door to door inquiries in the area and are still assessing CCTV opportunities.
“We know this a popular route and many residents will be concerned to learn that children were threatened on the cycle path. We do understand that this is an isolated incident and we have no further reports of a man matching the description attempting to rob anyone else that evening.
“To prey on those he believed were vulnerable is a very cruel act. At this time, we are seeking the assistance of the public to trace person responsible. If you witnessed anything suspicious around the time of the incident we would ask that you get in contact.
“No matter how small or insignificant you feel your information is, as part of our larger inquiry, it could make all the difference.”
