DRIVERS are being urged to plan ahead today as a section of Glasgow city centre is closed for the whole day.

A number of roads will be shut off ahead of the city's Christmas Lights switch-on event tonight, hosted by our own Georgie Bowie and Cassi.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to George Square to mark the start of the city’s festive celebrations, which starts at 5pm, with the roads round about shut until midnight.

The big switch on is at 7 pm. Scottish Ballet are performing. Treasure Island cast members from the Pavilion Theatre will then take to the stage as well as TikTok star Nati and the Soul Nation Choir.

Glasgow City Council have confirmed a list of roads that will be closed today from 6am until midnight.

During that time motorists will be prohibited from driving on the roads and no vehicles will be allowed to wait or load.

The following roads will be closed:

• Anchor Lane - for its whole length

• Cochrane Street - for its whole length

• Dundas Lane - for its whole length

• Dundas Street - between West George Street and Dundas Lane

• George Square (north part) - for its whole length

• George Street - between George Square and Albion Street

• George Street - between Montrose Street and Shuttle Street

• Hanover Street - for its whole length

• John Street - for its whole length

• Martha Street - for its whole length

• Montrose Street (Northbound) - between Ingram Street and Cochrane Street

• Montrose Street - between access to NCP car park and Ingram Street

• Nelson Mandela Place (north part) - for its whole length

• Nelson Mandela Place (south part) - for its whole length

• North Frederick Street - for its whole length

• North Hanover Street - between George Square and Queen Street Station vehicle access

• Queen Street - between Ingram Street and George Square

• South Frederick Street (northbound) - between Ingram Street and George Square

• South Frederick Street - for its whole length

• St Vincent Place - for its whole length

• West George Street - between West Nile Street and George Square

Travel restrictions

Between 6am and midnight, the following bus routes are affected:

• Ingram Street (Eastbound), between Queen Street and South Hannover Street

• LW0137 - North Hanover Street (Northbound), between George Square and Cathedral Street

• LW0756 - West George Street between West Nile Street and Nelson Mandela Place

• George Square (south side) between South Frederick Street and Queen Street
