Three workers have been evacuated from a waste management plant after a large plume of smoke and dust emerged from the premises.

Firefighters were called to the Clearwater waste management facility in Boden Street, Glasgow, at around 5.30pm on Thursday.

A hazardous materials incident was declared due to indications that a chemical reaction had taken place, a spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said.

Three appliances attended the scene along with specialist services to establish the exact nature of the reaction and the chemicals involved to determine if any hazardous particles were present.

The spokesman added: No casualties are involved, although three members of staff were evacuated as a precautionary measure and, as a further precaution, local residents were informed to stay indoors with windows closed.

It has since been determined by SFRS crews and scientific advisers that no hazardous materials are present in the smoke and dust plume.

SFRS crews are dealing with the chemicals involved by means of dilution in a water spray and containment of the resulting potential pollutant.''

Police and fire crews were remaining at the scene to ensure the safe resolution'' of the incident, he said.
