Three Treated After Flat Fire
A woman and two young boys have been treated in hospital after a fire was set in their flat close. All three suffered slight smoke inhalation as fumes filled the tenement in Langlands Road, Govan, Glasgow, at around 7.20pm yesterday. Firefighters extinguished the fire and the woman and two boys were given oxygen by officers before paramedics arrived and decided they needed further treatment. The children were taken to Yorkhill Hospital and the woman was taken to the Southern General Hospital. There injuries are not thought to be serious. Govan station manager Stephen McGrath said: Two firefighters in breathing apparatus were able to quickly put out this fire but the smoke it produced had already affected a woman and two small boys inside one of the flats.
Even small fires produce toxic smoke that threatens lives. Communal closes are obviously confined spaces so any fire in them is incredibly dangerous as the smoke quickly travels to properties and endangers people inside. Those who start fires should know their behaviour could cost lives or leave innocent people with truly horrendous injuries.
I would urge anyone with information on people who are involved in starting fires to help protect their communities by contacting the police, but it's also important we all act to ensure our homes are protected if a fire does start.''
