Thomas 'TC' Campbell dies

Thomas 'TC' Campbell - one of the men wrongly jailed for Glasgow's notorious “Ice Cream Wars” murders in the 1980s - has died.

The 66 year old was discovered at his home beside Loch Eck, near Dunoon, where he lived alone.

He'd spent 18 years in prison with co-accused Joe Steele for the horrific deaths of six members of the Doyle family in fire-bombing of a flat in Ruchazie in 1984.

But they cleared their names in 2004 after spending 18 years behind bars.

Christine Doyle Halleron, her 18-month-old son, Mark, James Doyle Snr, and his sons James Jnr, Andrew and Anthony, were killed in the fire started when petrol was poured into their tenement flat.

The attack was linked to turf wars for ice cream vans which were selling drugs, and Andrew Doyle had refused to give up their van route in Garthamlock.

It took three attempts for Campbell and Steele to clear their names.

They were freed on bail in 1996 ahead of an appeal, but sent back to prison two years later when new evidence was not allowed to be heard.

Finally, in 2000, the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission took up the case and TC was freed on bail once again in 2001, before the convictions were quashed in 2004.
