Demonstrators from environmentalist group This Is Rigged held a sit in protest at the Tesco Bank office in Glasgow, calling for a return to pre cost of living crisis prices.

12 members of This Is Rigged occupied the space from 11am on Thursday 14 December, hosting a Christmas party, and bearing banners which read: “Ken Murphy CEO is the real Scrooge” and “Merry Christmas from Kenbenezer Scrooge – wishing you a merry cost of living crisis! Tesco: very little help”.

The group said they were calling out the supermarket for “greedflation” and called their decision to security tag items like baby formula “an act of corporate violence”.

Glasgow community worker Hannah Bright said: “Supermarkets sell us this shiny ideal of Christmas that we can’t even afford… blatant greed and profiteering is unacceptable whatever the time of year.

“It is crucial that we stand by our communities and refuse to be at the mercy of cartoon villains like Ken Murphy who profit off of our misery.”

She added it was the “bare minimum” which could be done to help people struggling financially this winter.

This Is Rigged say they want to see a return to March 2021 prices for essential items, which would be an average decrease of 24%.

They are also calling on the Scottish Government to fully fund a community food hub per every 500 people in the country.

Lochaber based Eilidh McFadden said: “When business as usual is children being rushed to hospital in ambulances because of malnutrition we will continue to disrupt the status quo.

“It is absolutely disgusting that whilst parents are being forced to skip meals to feed their children.”

A Scottish Government spokesperson said they were working to get in contact with This Is Rigged to discuss their calls.

When asked to comment, a spokesperson for Tesco just said: “Police were called to an incident in the reception area of our Glasgow office this morning.”
