The top-floor blaze broke out at around 6.30am on Thursday in Aberfoyle Street, in the east end of Glasgow.
It caused “extensive smoke damage to the property” and a 64-year-old man was rescued by firefighters and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment to serious injuries.
Police said 30 people from surrounding flats were evacuated as a precaution, with a rest centre set up in nearby Haghill Sports Centre.
Fire crews remain at the scene and an investigation into the cause of the fire is to begin once it is fully extinguished.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police and emergency services responded to reports of a fire breaking out within the top floor of a block of flats on Aberfoyle Street, Glasgow, causing extensive smoke damage to the property.
“Police and emergency services attended and approximately 30 people were removed from their homes for safety.
“A full multi-agency response was initiated, with a rest centre established at Haghill Sports Centre to provide support for those who have been removed from their homes.
“A 64-year-old man has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he remains after receiving treatment for serious injuries.
“Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene. A joint investigation will begin once the fire is fully extinguished.”
