The Met Office is issuing a fresh weather warning for snow and ice across Glasgow and the west this weekend.

It comes into force from midnight tonight and will stay active through to 11am on Saturday morning.

The main concern is ice on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing.

In the event you are caught out by the weather, the Met Office advice is to "plan ahead giving yourself extra time for your journey".

On their website, the weather service says: "Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.

"If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).

"Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal.

"Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls."

It's back to back alerts as Storm Éowyn currently batters the central belt with hurricane force winds.

This rare red warning is in place until 5pm this evening.

It means all schools and nurseries in Glasgow and the west are closed and ScotRail services won't resume until tomorrow.

Glasgow airport is heavily affected by flight cancellations - check with your airline if you're due to fly.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is also cancelling all non-urgent outpatient appointments and elective hospital admissions.
