Passengers had to wait at Glasgow Airport as the tarmac was cleared and the Rangers v Hearts match at Ibrox was abandoned mid-play due to pitch conditions.
Motorists were warned of breakdowns and collisions and advised only to travel if necessary.
A police statement said: "Police Scotland are advising drivers that there is a high risk of disruption for road journeys in the Strathclyde and Dumfries and Galloway areas. If you do travel, you are likely to experience significant delays.
"Congestion caused by vehicles may restrict emergency, recovery or winter maintenance vehicles from providing essential assistance or from clearing roads.''
A travel bulletin issued by Glasgow City Council said: "Roads users should be aware that heavy snow is affecting most routes throughout Glasgow City.
Breakdowns and stranded vehicles are blocking numerous routes. Only travel if necessary.''
Traffic Scotland reported the closure of the A76 Cumnock - B7083 Auchinleck in Ayrshire, the M898 Erskine Bridge approach and the A751 in Stranraer.
Road operator Scotland Transerv, which manages routes in south west Scotland, said it had 26 gritters working around the clock to keep 22 major routes open.
After delays at Glasgow Airport caused by the snow, a spokesman tweeted:
Following the heavy snow showers earlier, we apologise for the disruption caused. Our priority is ensuring it's safe for aircraft to operate.
