Fire crews tackle blaze at derelict building in Shawlands

Fire crews spent the night putting out a large blaze at a derelict cinema building in Shawlands.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the former White Elephant on Kilmarnock Road shortly before 7pm on Tuesday.

There are no reports of any injuries and the road was reopened after 7am today (Wednesday).

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told us: “We were alerted at 6.59pm on Tuesday 11 July to reports of a fire within a derelict building on Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands.

“Nine fire appliances and more than 40 firefighters are currently in attendance as crews tackle and contain the fire.

“Businesses in the immediate area have been evacuated and road closures remain in place. Nearby residents should keep their windows closed and people are asked to avoid the area at this time.

“There are no reports of any casualties at this time.”

Kilmarnock Road is closed between Pollokshaws Road and Coustonholm Road, with drivers being advised to use alternative routes.
