300 jobs are set to be created on the site of an historic building with links to Glasgow’s shipbuilding past.

Plans for the now derelict Scotway House – the former offices of Meadowside Shipyard in Castlebank Street – will see the structure turned into student accommodation and two restaurants.

The ÂŁ40 million project is one of a number planned for the city over the next five years by Glasgow-based Structured House Group.

SHG chief executive Craig Inglis said the work would create several hundred jobs as well as helping the regeneration of the area.

He said: “Scotway House was neglected for a long time and it’s pleasing the site can, once again, be put to productive use.

“Shipbuilding was the driver of Glasgow’s economic past and it’s fitting that this land will now house students, who are the key to the city’s future prosperity.”

Land on the site of the former Scotway House was purchased in December last year, with construction due to for completion by July 2019.

The property, built in 1885, was formerly a drawing office for engineers at the shipbuilding firm D&W Henderson.

Plans for several ocean liners, including the predecessor to Britannia, the Royal Yacht, were created there.

Despite its B-listed status, the structure was not well known due to being hidden from public view behind several riverside buildings.

Scotway House later fell into disrepair and was repeatedly vandalised before it was damaged beyond repair by a major fire in 2016.
