ScotRail advising commuters not to use public transport unless 'absolutely essential'

It comes after people travelling to work this morning hit out at the company for the trains being crammed.

ScotRail has hit back after commuters took to social media as trains became overcrowded this morning.

It comes after the rail operator significantly reduced its service starting today.

In a statement last week, David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said:

"We are facing an unprecedented challenge on Scotland’s Railway and the revised timetable will help to provide a critical service for the key workers across the country.

"Our own people are absolutely committed and are working flat out on the frontline to help keep the country moving, while also keeping themselves and customers safe.

"The railway has an important role to play during this crisis and we will work closely with the Scottish Government to do all we can as the situation develops."

However, commuters posted pictures on social media of crowded trains on their way into Glasgow city centre.

The rail operator says people should not be travelling on public transport unless absolutely essential and railway staff have been affected by the impact of the coronavirus, leading to a reduction in number of services available.

David Lister, ScotRail Sustainability and Safety Assurance Director, said: "This is an unprecedented challenge on Scotland’s Railway and the revision of the timetable is very clearly aimed at providing a critical service for the key workers across the country.

"The advice for people not to travel unless absolutely necessary could not be clearer, and we urge people to follow that guidance and help us to deliver this essential service.

"The railway has an important role to play during this crisis and people need to take responsibility to follow the expert advice."
