Rutherglen man stranded after death of his fiance as riots break out on remote island
Last updated 21st Nov 2018
Clyde news has been speaking exclusively to a Rutherglen man whose dream holiday has descended into a living nightmare.
Craig Park was on holiday on the island of La Reunion with his partner Jon Paul McAllister to celebrate their engagement and the end of Jon Paul McAllister's chemotherapy treatment for bowel cancer.
But while abroad 38 year old's Jon Paul's cancer returned. He quickly deteriorated and he passed away in hospital, just days before an air ambulance could bring him home.
Now Craig Park is stranded as rioting and looting breaks out on the island as locals protest over fuel prices.
Speaking to us from the island where he's flown out to be with his brother, Steve Park told us they've been left in limbo since Jon Paul's death: "Up until now Craig's been living in the hospital, but we had to find a hotel when Jon Paul passed... we can't get another hotel, maybe we'll have to stay in some sort of conference room with some pillows and a blanket.
It's not just finding a room to stay, it's the fact there are no buses or taxis and we can't get anywhere. Craig has all his bags and all Jon Paul's personal effects as well.
Protestors are blocking roads, no food is being delivered, they're blocking cars and stopping things being moved around."
The brothers have been unable to register Jon Paul's death as government buildings have been closed down by the protests.
Steve told us: There is nothing we can do until the government offices open. When you sit around things go through your head. It's not a good situation for him to be in. He needs to be back in Glasgow.
The couple's friends and family were have been fundraising on a JustGiving page to help cover the mounting medical costs, not all of which were covered by insurance.
