Man jailed for brutal murder bid on partner's ex in Rutherglen
A thug who carried out a brutal murder bid on his partner's ex has been jailed for six years.
Shaun Myers, 30, turned on Robert Melrose at the victim's flat in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire on January 9 2021.
Mr Melrose was stamped on so badly, he was left with his attacker's footprint on his face.
Myers was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow having earlier pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge.
Prosecutor Isabella Ennis earlier told how Mr Melrose had initially been at his home with friend Connor Craig.
Myers - who had moved back in with his mother next door - then turned up drunk.
Miss Ennis said an argument broke out between Myers and Mr Craig regarding an incident involving his partner.
This was said to have happened in Mr Melrose's home when he and the woman were dating.
Mr Craig eventually left with Mr Melrose uninjured at that time.
But, Myers, now of Knightswood, Glasgow, went on to repeatedly stamp and also kick the victim following a loud row which other neighbours heard.
One then discovered an unconscious Mr Melrose then lying on the landing outside the flat.
Miss Ennis: "Police arrived and found Mr Melrose. They noted no sign of a pulse or breath.
"He was taken into the living room for CPR."
Mr Melrose was found to have "significant" swelling to his face and back of his head.
The prosecutor: "He also had indentations of a boot. This boot print later matched that of Myers."
A CT scan in hospital showed a "considerable" number of injuries including to the head, multiple rib fractures and a collapsed lung.
He was only fit to leave hospital on March 9 2021 and also needed rehabilitation.
Miss Ennis: "The injuries were life threatening requiring physiotherapy as well as occupational and speech therapy."
The court heard he can now live independently, but still has issues from what happened.
