A robber went on a spending spree after holding up a bookmakers at knifepoint.

James Low stole more than a ÂŁ1,000 during the raid at the Ladbrokes in Port Glasgow in March last year.

The 30 year-old then fled the scene in a taxi, but he was soon traced by police.

A judge heard how officers discovered a bundle of new clothes Low had bought from a sport shop the day after the crime.

He is now behind bars after he admitted to an assault and robbery charge at the High Court in Glasgow.

Low is due to be sentenced next month.

The court heard how a female worker was in the betting shop in Dubbs Road, Port Glasgow when a masked Low came in.

He demanded cash and showed he was armed with a knife.

The robber eventually escaped with a ÂŁ1,039 before going to a nearby social club, where he called a taxi.

Prosecutor Andrew Brown QC said police found the Ladbrokes worker to be "shaken and upset".

Officers investigating the raid later found the mask worn by Low dumped at a cycle path.

His DNA was on it, which eventually lead to his home in the town being searched.

Mr Brown told how police found "unused sportswear" that had been purchased the day after the hold up.

Judge Lady Rae remanded Low in custody and deferred sentencing for reports.
