River Clyde weir gate fixed as public urged to stay off riverbanks

A jammed weir gate which saw walkways alongside the River Clyde crack and partially collapse has finally been fixed.
Almost 48 hours since the mechanical operation on the third gate failed, engineers managed to drop the metal apparatus back in place on Wednesday evening.
Residents living on the banks of the Clyde told us earlier on Wednesday they felt 'terrified' and 'in the dark' after they watched the road outside their home snap in two.
Adelphi Street in the Gorbals has been severely damaged and locals say they have not been told what is going on, despite living within metres of sinking roads.
Glasgow City Council had been trying to fix the weir gate since the problem first emerged on Tuesday morning.
Engineers on site used a 300 tonne crane in an attempt to pull the 10-tonne weir gate up and into the grooves it runs on.
Plans had been put in place to use a hydraulic drill to try and move the giant sheet of metal from the bottom.
Waterside Street in the south side has also sunk several feet towards the water.
A spokesman said: "We have managed to lower the gate - and the upper channel, east of the weir, has started to fill.
"While this does not mean the weir is fixed, it should prevent any further damage to the river banks – which has been our priority.
“We are now assessing damage on the weir and the banks of the river in order to establish what works are required.
"Until that is complete, some areas and walkways will remain closed and we are asking the public to stay off the banks.“
