Coatbridge rapist snared after victim records his confession
43-year old Ian Willis attacked the woman at her home in 2017.
A subway driver is behind bars after being convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman. 43-year-old Ian Willis was brought to justice after his victim taped a confession from him.
On the tape the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is heard talking to Willis about what happened.
At one point she said: “It was rape,” and he replied: “I know.”
Prosecutor Lindsey Dalziel said: “The woman made a call to Mr Willis and spoke about what he had done to her. This phone call was recorded by one of her friends.”
The recording was played to the jury during the trial.
Willis denied raping or sexually assaulting the woman.
At the High Court in Glasgow Willis, from Coatbridge, was found guilty after trial of raping her at a house in Coatbridge on March 19, 2017.
He was also found guilty of sexually abusing her prior to the rape while she was asleep and incapable of giving consent.
The court heard that Willis had been at a St Patrick's Day celebration in the town and was drunk as he pounced on his victim while she slept.
He sexually abused her and then raped her.
Willis was also convicted of sexually abusing the woman by touching her breast during a taxi journey on an occasion between May 1 and June 30, 2016.
Judge Lord Turnbull remanded Willis in custody and placed him on the sex offenders' register.
He told Willis: “The offences of which you have been convicted are serious. The rape charge speaks for itself in terms of gravity.”
Lord Turnbull deferred sentence until October 30 at the High Court in Edinburgh. Defence counsel Louise Arrol will give her plea in mitigation then.
