A former Hearts star told jurors that he wanted to phone the police on his footballer son.

Jose Quitongo, 44, also said to police that he had seen his son Jai, 22, push his girlfriend Lauren Smith, 22, in her house.

His son denies attacking partner Lauren Smith at her Glasgow home in December last year.

He is also accused of grabbing her wrists, seizing her neck and pushing her down stairs to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment and acting in a threatening and abusive manner towards her.

Jose told Glasgow Sheriff Court that he went to pick Quitongo and Miss Smith up at her house.

He said the pair were “shouting and arguing very loudly” in the middle of the street.

Jose added: “I wanted to call the police as it was early in the morning, that’s why I said that.”

The former footballer told jurors the argument continued inside and outside the house.

He claimed to have driven Quitongo to his flat in Uddingston before police arrived later that night.

But, prosecutor Lucy Adams repeated Jose's police statement he gave the same day.

The statement said: “I could hear Lauren and Jai arguing so I made my way inside to make sure everyone was okay.

“As I got inside, I saw Jai push Lauren to the ground.

“I was trying to get Jai off Lauren and told him to stop it.”

Jose told the court that he never said that to the police.

He added: “My 3-year-old daughter was jumping and running at the time.

“I’m not saying the police are lying but I didn’t say that thing.”

The court heard briefly from Miss Smith that she went to the Sanctuary nightclub that night with Quitongo.

Miss Smith was treated at Glasgow Royal Infirmary later that morning for a fractured wrist.

Dr Matthew Torkington, 42, told jurors that Miss Smith had red marks on her neck and was crying when she arrived.

He said: “These are consistent with fingertip marks.”

He added that her right wrist which had been fractured in another incident had become fractured again.

Miss Adams asked if the wrist injuries were consistent with falling down stairs, Dr Torkington replied: “Yes.”

Miss Adams then asked if the injuries were consistent with being pushed down stairs, Dr Torkington said: “Yes.”

Dr Torkington said Miss Smith has made an almost full recovery but still has tingling in her fingers.

He added that her wrist will be stiff in the long term.

Earlier, Miss Smith’s neighbour John Hamilton, 38, told jurors that he was woken up by screaming outside.

He said: “I went to the window and Jai had a hold of Lauren and she was screaming about her wrists.

“He was grabbing her and holding her.

“She was screaming ‘Jai my wrists, my wrists’.”

Mr Hamilton raced over to Miss Smith’s house with his wife.

He said: “Lauren was on the couch crying hysterically and was sitting next to Jai.

“She was screaming to get him to leave but he didn't leave.

“Jai said to phone the police and his Dad tried to get him to leave a couple of times but he refused.”

Mr Hamilton described Quitongo as “cocky” and he left with his Dad before police arrived.

The trial continues before Sheriff Lindsay Wood.
