Princes Square sky bar given the go-ahead
Plans to open a sky bar on the roof of a shopping centre on Buchanan Street have been given the go-ahead.
Glasgow City Council has approved an application from The Restaurant Bar and Grill at Princes Square, which requested permission for an extension to include a bar and dining areas and a kitchen with a pizza oven.
The company aims to "create an unrivalled destination sky bar dining and lounge area on the rooftop of the Prince Square shopping centre", a planning report states.
It claims the development "will deliver an iconic sky bar to Glasgow city centre, create new jobs and enhance the existing Restaurant Bar and Grill facility, as well as help support and sustain Princes Square and the surrounding area".
The bar would have seats for around 100 guest and, according to the plans, the design will respect the period, style and architectural character of the building.
"The proposed extension incorporates a retractable awning, which when open will enable patrons to enjoy outside dining," the planning report states.
"The sky bar represents a very significant financial investment and it will make a significant contribution to enhancing Glasgow city centre as the primary location for retail, employment, leisure, tourism, and evening economy uses.
"It will operate throughout the day and into the evening, thereby enhancing the night time economy within the area, further contributing to the vitality and viability of the city centre.
"The proposal will complement the city centre’s retail offer and generate new additional employment opportunities."
Princes Square is a category B listed building in the city’s central conservation area and the restaurant is within the glasshouse extension to the rear north-eastern corner of the centre.
