The 31-year-old was found seriously ill in Glasgow on August 24 and died on his way to hospital.
The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (Pirc) has now launched an investigation into the initial police response following a report of concern for the man's welfare.
A Pirc spokesman said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner to undertake an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 31-year-old man who was found seriously ill in Glasgow on August 24, 2016.
"The man was treated at the scene but later died on the way to hospital.
"The investigation will focus on the initial police response after a report of concern was made about the man's welfare.
"A report on the commissioner's findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
