The 23-year-old victim is said to be in a stable condition in hospital after the incident at the KOF Convenience Store in Dumbarton Road, Yoker, Glasgow, at around 11.20am on Sunday.
A man entered the shop and threatened staff with a gun while demanding cigarettes and money.
He then shot the victim in the leg and made off empty handed, Police Scotland said.
The 23-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.
Police described the incident as deplorable'' and said it was lucky no one else was injured.
The suspect is said to be young, white and around 5ft 8in tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black hooded jacket, black tracksuit trousers and had his face covered, officers said.
He made off along Dumbarton Road towards Clydebank after the shooting.
Detective Inspector Brian Gallagher said: For someone to discharge a firearm over cash and cigarettes from a corner shop is just deplorable.
One person injured is bad enough but this could have involved others - including children who could have been in the shop at the time.
Officers are currently carrying out door to door inquiries and checking CCTV in an effort to trace this man who obviously has no concern for either staff in the shop or the general public.
We are still trying to establish whether the suspect made off on foot or had a car nearby.
The shop is near to a busy road and at this time there may have been a few people about. It's possible the suspect had been hanging about the area prior to the incident, so if you have seen him or have any information that will help us with our enquiries, it is important that you contact police.
