Police Return To Greenock Murder Scene
Locals questioned a week after Michael Mearns was found dead
Police investigating the murder of a man found seriously injured in a cemetery have been questioning people in the area a week on from the incident. Michael Mearns, 56, was found with serious injuries at Greenock cemetery in South Street at 8pm on Thursday July 30. Mr Mearns, from Greenock, died at Inverclyde Royal Hospital the following day. Plain clothes and uniform officers were at the scene between 7pm and 9pm last night to stop and interview people in the hope of jogging their memories about the incident. Detective chief inspector Laura McLuckie, of Police Scotland's major investigation team (west), said: "The response and support from the public has been very encouraging so far, however it is vital that we speak to anyone else who may have been in the vicinity of Greenock cemetery last Thursday night and has either seen Michael there or has seen anyone acting suspiciously within. "Our enquiries have so far revealed that Michael was a quiet man who kept himself to himself. "I urge anyone who saw him prior to last Thursday evening, and who has not yet spoken to the police, to get in touch immediately as you may have information that could assist our inquiry.''
