Police Probe Racist Abuse At Braehead Shopping Centre
Officers are appealing for information following a hate crime incident on Saturday 4th April 2015 at Braehead shopping centre.
Around 1900 hrs, two men, believed to be Asian, were within their car, thought to be a Volkswagen, at traffic lights on Old Govan Road (where the road turns onto Eastbound M8.) As they were waiting on the lights to change, a man in a white Land Rover Discovery, drove up beside them, got out of his car and subjected them to a torrent of racial abuse.
Once the traffic lights changed, the victim’s car drove off closely followed by the suspect’s vehicle onto the M8 motorway. The matter was reported to police by a number of other drivers who witnessed the incident.
The victims themselves have yet to report the matter to police and officers would like to speak to them as a matter of urgency.
Officers are in the process of reviewing CCTV images from in and around the area in an effort to find out as much detail about the incident.
Sergeant Edington said:
“There is no room in our society for racial abuse and it is not acceptable to treat people in such a manner. I have no doubt that this incident caused individuals considerable distress, but I would like to reassure them that this matter is under investigation and I am urging them to get in touch with us so that we can continue to progress our investigation. I would like to thank the members of the public who contacted police to report the matter, indicating clearly that people in Scotland will not tolerate racism. If anyone has any additional information or knowledge, please do get in touch with us.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Johnstone police office on the non-emergency number, 101. Alternatively, anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where they can give information anonymously.
