Police probe hate crime in Springburn area of Glasgow

Detectives are investigating a hate crime in Glasgow in which a 61 year old man from Zimbabwe had a lit firework thown at him by a gang.

Police say at around 0045 hours on Sunday they were called to a report of an incident involving a group of youths and a resident in Berryburn Place.

It is understood they threw a firework at the victim’s property prompting him to come out to confront them.

The youths then proceeded to racially abuse the man and throw bricks at him before running off in an unknown direction.

The victim was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and released after treatment.

An extensive investigation, led by the local Problem Solving Team for Glasgow North East, has been launched with officers conducting door-to-door enquiries as well as examining CCTV.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Stevie Hazlett said: “This was a horrific attack on a family home and a father who came out to protect them.

“It is absolutely essential that we trace the cowardly and despicable individuals responsible as soon as possible because this type of behaviour simply will not be tolerated in our community.

“Officers are following a number of lines of enquiry and I am confident that we will find the group of youths who did this but we need the support of the local community to achieve this.
