An elderly woman and her dog who died after being hit by a car in South Ayrshire have been named by police.

Margaret Young, 97, from Ayr, was hit by a grey BMW car while she and her pet were crossing Holmston Road in the town on Sunday.

The accident happened at 4.55pm and Ms Young was taken to Ayr Hospital, where she died a short time later. Her Jack Russell dog Fran was taken by police to a local vet but died en route.

The 52-year-old male driver of the BMW was not injured.

Constable Alan Cook, of the divisional road policing unit based at Irvine, North Ayrshire, is appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

He said: "Although a number of people came to assist the woman after the crash, no-one we have spoken to so far actually witnessed the crash, so we would appeal to anyone who saw the collision to contact police as soon as possible."
