Police have appealed for witnesses after a serious assault in Falkirk.

Officers were called to a disturbance at a taxi rank on Newmarket Street at around 3.15am on Monday after a 34-year-old man was found with a serious head injury.

He was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital, then transferred to the Western General in Edinburgh where he is being treated.

Police Scotland have issued a description of a male suspect and appealed for witnesses.

He was white, 5ft 6in tall, of stocky build, with a shaven head, wearing a bright red short-sleeved t-shirt. The man is believed to have left the area after the assault in a silver taxi.

Detective Inspector Jim Thomson, of Falkirk CID, said: "We're continuing to conduct enquiries in the area and want to thank the local community and businesses for their patience at this time.

"We'd urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or who recognises the man's description, to get in touch as soon as possible.''
