Police Appeal For Teenagers In Greenock Murder Inquiry
Detectives investigating the murder of a man found injured in a cemetery are appealing for three teenage boys thought to have been in the area at the time to come forward.
Michael Mearns, 56, was found with serious injuries at Greenock cemetery in the town's South Street at 8pm on Thursday July 30. Mr Mearns, from Greenock, died at Inverclyde Royal Hospital the following day.
The three teenagers aged between 13 and 16 were dressed similarly and were seen leaving the Spar shop in South Street at about 7.50pm on July 30.
They then walked past the gates to the cemetery and were last seen on Orangefield Lane, police said.
They are all described as white with short dark hair.
The first youth had a medium build and was wearing a dark jacket and trousers and blue jumper with a light-coloured collar underneath while the other two had slim builds and were also wearing dark jackets and trousers.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura McLuckie said Again, I would like to thank the public for their help and support over the last couple of weeks.
It is of great importance that we trace the three teenage boys who were seen in the vicinity at around 7.50pm on the night that Mr Mearns was assaulted within the cemetery.
I urge them to contact police immediately even if they think they have no valuable information to give.''
Last week police said they wanted to trace two men and two women also seen in the area at the time of the incident.
