The circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Glasgow are to be probed by a police watchdog.

The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (Pirc) will look into the events leading up to the death of George McLean, 44, last month.

The investigation will focus on the response by police officers to a report of concern for Mr McLean's welfare in the city on Wednesday April 26.

He was later taken to hospital for treatment, where he died the following day.

It is understood the investigation will examine how quickly police responded to the initial report of concern.

A Pirc spokesman said: "The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (Pirc) is investigating the circumstances leading up to the death of 44-year-old George McLean.

"The incident has been referred to the Pirc for investigation by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) and a report on the commissioner's findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
