William Brittle died at the Royal Alexandra Hospital on June 7 following an alleged assault at a property in the Renfrewshire town's Broomlands Street the previous day.
Two men aged 26 and 45 and a 41-year-old woman were arrested in connection with his death.
The Police Investigations Review Commissioner (Pirc) has begun an investigation into the police response.
A spokesman for the Pirc said: "The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) has been instructed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to carry out an investigation in relation to the initial police response to an incident on June 6 in Paisley.
"William Brittle, 60, who was involved in the incident, was later taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where he died on June 7 2016.
"A report into the findings of the investigation will be submitted to the COPFS in due course.''
