Michaella McCollum has served two years and three months in Lima's Virgen de Fatima and Ancon 2 prisons in Peru known for its poor living conditions and sanitation.
Conditions to McCollum’s release haven’t been confirmed but restrictions could prevent her from leaving the country and returning to Ireland.
Kevin Winters, McCollum's solicitor, said she was released effectively on parole on Thursday night and was waiting to hear the terms of her release.
I can confirm Michaella has been released from jail and I'm waiting to hear the outcome of the judicial process,”
McCollum was released after South America brought in new legislation on early prison release.
Partner in crime Melisa Reid remains in prison but is hoping to serve her remaining sentence in Scotland.
The two women were caught in Peru trying to smuggle ÂŁ1.5million worth of cocaine into Spain.
They claimed they had been forced into it, but later pled guilty.
The two were facing a 15-year prison term but cut a deal behind-closed-doors.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said on Friday: We continue to provide consular assistance to Melissa Reid. “We remain in contact with her family and with the local authorities.''
