Glasgow’s People’s Palace musuem, and Winter Gardens glasshouse which has been closed on safety grounds for more than three years, could cost £25 million to refurbish according to culture bosses in the city.

Glasgow Life is seeking the views of people in the city on the hundred-year-old museum’s future, after it was partially closed on safety grounds in 2018.

Following the successful reopening of the Burrell Collection in March, Glasgow Life is making the museum’s restoration a top priority.

Glaswegians can give their opinions through an online survey, or they can attend outdoor events at the palace on June 11, 28 and 29.

A jewel among Glasgow's musuems

Duncan Dornan, Head of Museums and Collections for Glasgow Life, said: “The People’s Palace has always been important for exploring the history of people living and working in Glasgow.

“We have developed an approach to museums which is absolutely rooted in the opinions and aspirations of the people using those museums, particularly Glaswegians.

“In developing the People’s Palace it’s essential that we consult with people and deliver the museum they want.”

Glasgow Life’s announcement was welcomed by Elspeth King of Friends of the People’s Palace.

Ms King said: “We will be there to help every step of the way to see the palace resorted, refurbished and represented for the good of Glaswegians and all visitors to the city.”
