Pensioner dies after three-vehicle crash near Port Glasgow
An 87-year-old man has died following a crash on the A8 near Port Glasgow.
The man was driving a red Ford Fiesta at around 4.20pm on Saturday, and was travelling westbound near to the Newark Castle roundabout when he crashed into the rear of a red Volkswagen Touran.
The impact caused the Volkswagen to crash into the back of a red Jaguar X-Type.
Emergency services attended and pronounced the pensioer dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen Touran, two women aged 45 and 75, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
The 75 year-old remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A 59-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman who were in the Jaguar X-Type were uninjured.
Police closed the road for around five-and-a-half hours while inquiries were carried out.
Sergeant Kenny Malaney of Police Scotland said: "We are trying to establish exactly what happened here and would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A8 near to Newark Castle immediately prior to, or at the time of the incident, who may have information that could help us to contact us.
"We would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage to look back, it may be able to assist us. We urge you to come forward."
