Pedestrian in critical condition after being knocked down in East Kilbride

A 22-year old man is in a critical condition after he was knocked down in East Kilbride this morning.

Emergency services were called to the A749 near Western Road at 7:45am after the pedestrian, who was on the central island on the road.

The man was taken to Hairmyres Hospital but has since been transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as critical.

The 22 year-old female driver of the Peugeot van was uninjured but has been left badly shaken by the incident.

The road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators conducted enquiries at the scene.

Sergeant Alasdair Marshall said: ‘I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the A749 this morning, in particular motorists, bus drivers and taxi drivers who were on the opposite carriageway.

‘If you have any information or any dash cam footage, please do contact us.

‘Your information could assist in the ongoing investigation into establishing the circumstances of this incident.’
