Pay For Parking On Your Phone

Glasgow's parking charges go cashless at last

Drivers in Glasgow will be able to use their phone to pay for parking in the city.

The service provided by RingGo will allow people to charge parking fees direct to their credit or debit card via their mobile phone.

Users can also top up their parking time without returning to their car and have the option of being sent a reminder text message.

It will ask for the number plate, make and colour of the vehicle you want to park, the location of where you're parked, how long you want to park for and your card details. Thereafter, RingGo remembers the details and recalls the information provided.

The new service will be rolled out across the city, starting with the city centre on-street pay and display machines from today,

Parking tickets are not required as parking attendants look up a vehicle's registration plate on a hand-held device to check it's registered and has paid to park where it is located.

Be warned though, if any part of the vehicle registration plate or location is incorrect, drivers will receive a penalty charge notice.

The Council says that more than 6 million people across the UK use RingGo to pay for parking in 225 towns and cities as an alternative to pay and display.

Councillor Alistair Watson, Glasgow City Council's Executive Member for Sustainability and Transport, said: "This is great news for drivers in Glasgow.

"The new system offers a quick and easy way to pay for parking. It's fast, straightforward and convenient. I am sure this cashless parking service will be welcomed by everyone who regularly parks in the city.

"It will also reduce the number of parking machines in the city. We have more than 1000 pay and display machines and as part of this programme we will see that number fall, as well as associated costs."
