Furious parents have hit out a Glasgow theatre's policy on babies which refers to "inconsiderate parents" spoiling other customers' enjoyment, calling the guidelines "awful and unprofessional".

Among the list of 11 rules it states crying babies should be removed from the auditorium as quickly as possible and that "every effort is made to avoid your baby being sick" when winding children.

The Pavilion Theatre said it had to draw up the guidelines after repeated problems, including crying babies, over several years - and it sent round a reminder before a performance of children's show Justin's Party yesterday.

The Pavilion's manager Iain Gordon has defended the policy.

He said: “I must stress that this is not a new rule, it was implemented in 2007.

“This rule is to avoid people bringing very young babies into the theatre without a ticket.

“This is to ensure that we comply with the numbers that we are licenced for and is also to comply with current health and safety legislation and insurance conditions.

“This is not as I say something new and most other theatres, venues and cinemas now have a similar approach to this.

“It is also in place to ensure the enjoyment of the show by others.

“We stick by the decision made some 10 years ago and think that our customers benefit from this.”
