Paisley has missed out on being named the UK City of Culture for 2021.

The Renfrewshire town was up against 4 other UK cities including Swansea and Sunderland.

Coventry was announced as the winner tonight in Hull – the home of the current title holders – where £1 billion has been invested over 4 years.

The Paisley bid aimed at changing the town's fortunes by creating the equivalent of 4,700 jobs over the next decade and boosting the local economy by ÂŁ175 million, leaving a lasting legacy for all of Renfrewshire.

Speaking following the announcement that Coventry will be the 2021 UK City of Culture, Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said:

"Paisley's bid journey has been inspiring‎. Beginning two years ago with hundreds of people gathered at the picturesque Paisley Abbey for the official launch.

"Since then businesses, cultural and community groups have thrown their support behind the town’s ambitions. A real strength has been the extensive community engagement with more than 30,000 people involved. All helping put together an outstanding bid for Paisley and for Scotland.

Renfrewshire council leader Iain Nicholson also gave us his reaction:

It was also hoped the title would bring a programme of major events and world-class culture, bringing an estimated 1.7 million attendances in 2021 - with a million visitors and tourists spending ÂŁ43 million.

The group had planned to spend ÂŁ113 million to transform the town centre, venues and attractions and plough in investment that would transform the high street and bring visitors to Paisley for years to come.

Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of University of the West of Scotland, and Paisley 2021 Partnership board member, said:

“Naturally we are disappointed with tonight’s result. However, being shortlisted and getting to the final stage of the UK City of Culture, is a huge testament to the hard work dedication and community spirit demonstrated by the people of Paisley and beyond.

Regardless of the outcome, the town and everyone involved has done themselves proud and we can hold our heads high.

“The recognition and exposure Paisley received as part of the bid process has already presented significant benefits to the town.

Importantly, it has brought communities and businesses together under one mantle and University of the West of Scotland has been delighted to be involved as a Bid partner, working towards and recognising the importance of the Bid for the whole community. Taking part can only have been a good thing for Paisley and we will use the momentum to continue to grow and flourish for years to come.

“Everyone at the University would like to recognise the hard work and efforts of the Paisley Bid Team, and at the same time congratulate Coventry on their success.”

The Paisley 2021 team say involvement in culture is proven to be good for people's health and well-being and the group will offer culture for all, and create opportunities for everybody in Renfrewshire to access those benefits
