Computers in GP surgeries and hospitals across Lanarkshire have been down for several hours after they were corrupted by a virus.

A statement from the health board says they took steps to quickly stop the malware spreading and experts are now working to put a fix in place.

It comes just months after their IT systems were one of the worst affected by a cyber attack on NHS boards across the country.

Appointments at Hairmyres, Monklands and Wishaw General Hospitals have been cancelled.

NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Calum Campbell has issued the following statement in response to today's IT issues.

"We have detected some incidences of malware.

"We took immediate action to prevent this spreading while we carried out further investigations.

"We are now putting in place a solution from our IT security provider.

"While the issue is being resolved our staff have been working hard to minimise the impact on patients and we apologise to anyone who has been affected"
