The first direct flights from Scotland to Jamaica are to start next summer.

Run by Thomson and First Choice, the flights from Glasgow to Montego Bay will operate from three weeks from June 22 2017.

Along with summer flights to Cape Verde, the airline said the flights will better-connect Scotland to "some of the most exciting destinations'' in the world.

The Jamaica flights will serve popular resorts including Lucea, Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Trelawny.

Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said: "We're very excited that Thomson will be launching Scotland's first direct flight to Jamaica from Glasgow Airport next summer.

"Jamaica is the perfect Caribbean retreat, boasting white sands, delicious food and beautiful natural surroundings including waterfalls, mountains and banana plantations.

"Cape Verde is also a fantastic sun destination and we are confident that both of these announcements will generate a great deal of interest amongst our customers.''

The flights to Jamaica will run between June 22 and July 13 next year while the route to Sal, Cape Verde, will start this winter and continue in summer 2017.

Karen Switzer, director of aviation planning for Thomson and First Choice, said: "Adding more capacity from Glasgow Airport with the introduction of a new route to Sal, Cape Verde, and a seasonal route to Jamaica demonstrates our commitment to the airport and the local area.''
