A murder enquiry has been launched following the death of a man in Galston.

The body of 56-year-old Robert Stewart Clelland, known locally as Stewart, was found in his flat on Wallace Street at around 6.20am on Wednesday.

Police say Stewart had been in a pub near his home on Wallace Street until around 9pm on Tuesday, and was on the phone to a family member around an hour later.

It’s also understood that a disturbance with raised voices was heard nearby at around 11.30pm.

Officers are reviewing CCTV and are keen to hear from anyone who saw Stewart that night, or overheard any kind of disturbance. They’re also asking anyone who saw Stewart’s grey van – a Nissan NV 200 – being parked at Bentick square or driven in Galston that night.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Sommerville, Kilmarnock Police Office, said: “This is a small close knit town and we want to catch the person responsible for Stewart’s murder. Any information, no matter how significant you may think it may or may not be, can be passed to Kilmarnock Police Office via 101, quoting incident number 0742 of Wednesday 24 July 2019. Alternatively you can contact CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where information can be given in confidence.”
