The heartbroken family of a Motherwell toddler, who died after swallowing a button battery, are appealing for motorcyclists to act as a funeral escort for their bike-loving son.

17 month old Hugh McMahon passed away on Boxing Day after being rushed to hospital on Christmas Eve.

Speaking exclusively to Clyde 1, Hugh's uncle Jimmy said: "It's good to raise awareness of the dangers of these batteries. A lot of things have them than you'd maybe not realise like thermometers and bath toys.

"The wee guy absoutely adored motorbikes. If he wasn't stopping in the street to watch them then he was watching them on YouTube.

"It'd be really great if we could get a load of bikes out there to help give him his final send off.

"It would really mean a lot to all of us.

"We're also asking if everyone could wear a wee something blue just in memory of wee Hughey."

Mourners and riders are also asked to wear something blue in memory of Hugh.

The bikes are asked to meet at Route 66, Unit3 Flemington Industrial Park, Motherwell, at 12.15pm on Thursday.

From there they will travel to the church and then on to Eastfields Cemetery.
