Motherwell Theatre closes with 'immediate effect' after RAAC found in roof
The venue says the safety of staff and the public is the priority
Motherwell Concert Hall and Theatre is closing with "immediate effect" after a type of crumbling concrete, known as RAAC, was found in the roof.
Water leaks were also found in the roof, which North Lanarkshire Council is telling Radio Clyde News makes the building impossible to open safely.
It will remain closed for works, and the venue says ticketholders for upcoming events will be contacted.
'A full intrusive survey is required'
The news was shared via Motherwell Concert Hall's Twitter page: "Motherwell Concert Hall & Theatre will be closed with immediate effect after an initial survey found RAAC in the roof.
"A full intrusive survey is required. While this is carried out, the venue will remain closed. Ticket holders will be contacted for performances affected."
Grease the Musical, which was due to run this week, is among the shows that have been cancelled.
'Closed until further notice'
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “An initial inspection of the Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall has found that the majority of the roof is made with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) planks.
“The inspection also found some evidence of water ingress to the roof. These findings mean that a full intrusive survey must be carried out.
"Unfortunately it is not possible to operate the building as normal while this survey takes place and with the safety of the public and staff firmly in mind, we have decided that the theatre and concert hall will be closed with immediate effect until further notice.
“The team at the concert hall will be touch directly with ticket holders for performances affected.”
